A little bit about me...

On tour 2010
Chances are, if you are reading this, you probably know me somehow.  I suppose that it is worth going into some breadth at least.

I started this blog in 2010 when I decided to ride my bike across the country with Bike the US for MS raising money for research and awareness of Multiple Sclerosis.  If you haven't, you should check out this amazing organization and the folks that devote their time and their energy to this amazing cause.

The real humor in this though is that this blog started out about cycling, which is amazing considering that I hadn't owned a bike in years.  Then you read the blog and realize that it has little to do with biking - AHA! Really, it has little to do with anything, but that is OK.  I am not forcing anyone to read it; I am not that mean.

Working with Burrowing Owls in California
When I'm not biking across the country, I am a wildlife biologist - specifically, I work with an endangered shorebird called the piping plover (Charadrius melodus).  I have been working with birds for a while now, but I cut my teeth on invertebrates, butterflies and polychaetes from the Antarctic ocean floor.  I love what I do, it keeps me out-of-doors often enough, affords me the opportunity to travel, and I absolutely love the process of research and discovery.  Most recently, I have been looking at the response of the plovers to the oil spill in the gulf and the floods in the Great Plains.

Shamrock Marathon - 2010
I have a ton of other hobbies as well, running - actually training for the 2010 Shamrock Marathon is what gave me the crazy notion that I could go on the bike trip.  The training for the marathon definitely gave me the added confidence to tackle the tour.  I also love to bake my own bread, have recently started canning fruits and vegetables, and I take any excuse I can find to get myself outside.

And then there is Emma.  She is my 7 year-old Australian Shepherd.  I am not alone in thinking that she is one of the sweetest dogs ever, but I am of course biased.  I try to spend as much time as I can with her, she is a constant companion and quite the traveler.
Emma as a puppy in Utah
It is true that 2010 and 2011 (so far) were busy years for me, full of adventure and excitement - a fair share of the mundane too.  Here is to hoping that there continues to be adventure, at least then there is some hope of my writing a post from time to time.
